VINTAGE FLIGHT MUSEUM

I have a bizarre attraction to old rusty places. I’m not sure why, but take me to them and I become as happy as a lark. I think it’s because there is an unfettered honesty these places tend to showcase. None of them are cleaned up to look pretty…they don’t need to hide what they’re about or what their history is…it’s a similar story arc for most of the sort of crude settings I find myself enjoying.

The Vintage Air Museum was no different, despite the fact that it is, indeed a museum. But, it’s really two old hangers with a bunch of old planes that are clearly receiving some hard restoration work. Some of these old planes still get air time, so the museum is halfway a part of a functioning air field. It has the same aura of places like Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, AL, or the old Tiger Racing shop I frequented during my time as an LSU student - same smells, same aesthetic, same concrete floors, as if it’s all the same soul in a different body. The museum therefore lent itself to being dark, rough, and moody, which is exactly what I tried to capture during my shoot walking through the museum.
