HENNESSEY MAMMOTH 400

Before it was a Hennessy, it was a Black Widow.

When Fox Factory began purchasing truck up-fitters across the country, SCA Performance in Trussville, Alabama was absorbed into the fold. SCA designed and assembled several styling upgrade packages for American trucks under the brands Black Widow, Rocky Ridge, Apex, and several other up-fitting brands. However, many of these brands shared similar parts and upgrade packages, leaving brand distinction to be somewhat absent from a functionality standpoint.

Fox Factory looked to push the Black Widow more upmarket against its sister brands by developing a lowered Ram truck with power upgrades, better exhaust, sharper suspension, and refined exterior details. Dubbed the Black Widow SR650 (and eventually the Hennessy Mammoth 400), this truck looked to bring Ram’s old school street appeal back to the streets, but with the Black Widow touch.

MISSION:

Upgrade the Black Widow brand identity to a more premium level by designing a Ram-based street truck.

WHERE BLACK WIDOW WAS…

By introducing performance-focused components into the formula, Black Widow could become more of a light luxury performance brand. This would be similar to what Shelby trucks offer, but staying a rung under Shelby as not to compete with them. Black Widow would still maintain a focus on style and luxury as the headliner point for its brand.

Given that this is a Ram truck, performance cues would take inspiration from Mopar vehicles to ensure the final design language has a touch of the familiar “Chrysler Performance” look to it, although in the end, it needs to read predominantly Black Widow to the audience.

Black Widow has traditionally been a style upgrading brand across all American truck brands. The packages were relatively formulaic: a 6” lift, bespoke fender flares, new interior leather, bespoke wheels, side steps, nicer exhaust, and optional custom paint colors. For every Ford, Ram, Chevy, or Jeep they serviced, this formula was applied to make a Black Widow product. Hardcore performance upgrades were never really a consideration, but seeing the similarity between itself and its sister brands like Rocky Ridge, light performance changes could be the key to making Black Widow packages a more unique offering.

DEVELOPING THE CONCEPT

A full body kit was to be developed for the SR650, but the most important focus was the Front Bumper. The front bumper was the largest opportunity for visual distinction, so the body kit was made to support the front bumper’s changes and leave the rest of the vehicles design lightly enhanced, rather than disrupted. The truck needed to look more factory and less third-party.

A lot of the sketching work also focused on deeper details in individual components. Majority of the aesthetic changes had to coincide with as little cost increase as possible, so it was critical to ensure any ideas were developed with feasibility and viability in mind. That meant keeping mental notes about assembly, packaging boundaries, and ensuring the design led to a controllable assembly process for the factory floor technicians.

BUILDING THE PROTOTYPE

After developing the aesthetic changes, the concept sketches were turned into assemblies and tested on a 3D scan of a Ram. The digital prototype was evaluated in virtual reality using the colors that Black Widow was to offer upon release. Physical prototypes of all parts designed were evaluated intensely to ensure no packaging issues would leave the design ill-proportioned or difficult to put together. Once completed, the parts were given a test-fit by the engineering team and some of the factory technicians to see if any assembly methods needed to change. Fortunately, only minor tweaks were requested, and the design was successful in its first prototype build.

Before the SR650 could go into production, the design was sold to Hennessy. The truck was rebranded as the Hennessy Mammoth 400 Sport Truck Upgrade, which was made for a limited run of 250 vehicles in 2024. A graphics package was also added to the final product as a nod to the paintwork seen on classic Dodge Vipers. The exterior components remained the same, which included carbon fiber accents, matching Borla exhaust tips, fender flares, new rear bumper trimmings, and bespoke side skirts that extend the surfacing of the front bumper to the rear wheels. Although the truck did not get sold as a Black Widow product, it did end up becoming somewhat of a visionary springboard for the brand. Black Widow has since released lowered F-150’s and Silverados in the wake of this vehicle’s design, which expand upon the concept of “mild elevated performance” with other new vehicle offerings apart from pickup trucks.
