■History and Construction

The problem of moving sofas has been around for a long time, but solving this issue has not been much of a consideration in majority of the sofas that have been manufactured. Part of that comes down to its construction, which has not changed much since the development of the first Chesterfield sofas. As the highlight of the living room, the sofa is supposed to invite relaxation in multiple positions, wether it be sitting down, curled up, or laying across all the seats. This may be the reason why most popular sofas remain unchanged in their architecture, so finding the key items that make a sofa what it is is important.

■Common Shared Components

01 - SPRINGS

Provide support to the cushions without allowing someone to bottom out onto a hard surface. Absorbs the shock if someone falls into the couch, like when a user "plops" onto the sofa. Shaped either in an "S" pattern or helical coil like most normal springs.

02 - FRAME

Defines the structure and shape of the sofa, acts as the primary interface where the upholstery is fastened and supported. Fixed in shape, assembled using staples, glue, and screws which eventually become unaccessible. The feet are sometimes removable.

03 - CUSHIONING

Generally foam or a plush cotton. Cushioning can vary in deurometer and shape to provide different levels of softness for seating. Sometimes cushions use multiple types of foam in layers to better control support of the user.
